Rie Matsui was born and raised in the city of Osaka, Japan.  Growing up in such a metropolitan city full of industrial factories and great mixture of culture and urban development, she gained her understanding of balance between old and new. ​ During her school years in Japan, she kept developing her interests in art and learned how to sketch and paint.  At the age of 18, she moved to Los Angeles, California.  While she was majoring in interior design at San Diego Mesa College, she decided to move to New York city for the New York School of Interior Design(NYSID), which is one of the most recognized interior design schools in the nation.  She graduated from NYSID with a BFA in 2011. 

She lives in Brooklyn, NY and is currently working independently; her creative field includes jewelry making where she uses custom and vintage pieces.​
